JerryWeinberg, Becoming a Technical Leader [ISBN 0932633021 (amazon.com, search)]

Yet another classic JerryWeinberg book, filled with nuggets of wisdom and common sense for the aspiring technologist. A few of my favorite quotes from the book... --DaveHoover

If you can't tolerate being a public fool, you're not going to succeed in a role where all your actions are studied in detail.

The best computer programmers never write a new program when they can use an old one for a new job.

Innovation is concerned with redefining a task or the way a task is done.

Success or failure often turns on miniscule differences in problem definitions.

And for me, once again, the biggest a-ha was in a now classic definition:

Leadership is creating a context for others to succeed.

Oh. And everyone who wants to influence what goes on around them should read, know, and use the MOIJ model. Everyone. - JamesBullock

As great as this book is, I think the real value of it for the reader is in taking up and following through on the exercises relevant to your development. For example, here are three I've chosen for myself:

Chapter 7, question 7. Read at least one autobiography of someone you admire. Note in your journal those parts that are particularly surprising to you, and those parts that move you most.

Chapter 23, question 2. During what activity of yours does time go by the fastest? the slowest? What does that tell you about these activities? What does that tell you about yourself?

Chapter 24, question 4. Make a list of all the people you could go to for support if you lost your job. What kind of support would each one give you? What kind of support would you like to have, but for which there is nobody on your list?
